Tobacco and Women's Health: A Survey of Popular Women's
Magazines August 1999-August
2000
The survey was
conducted by American Council on Science and Health. This survey revealed that these
women's magazines accepted cigarette advertisements and published many
health-related articles, but that the overwhelming majority of these
articles focused on fitness, mental health, nutrition, gynecology, and
diet; less than one percent of the health-related articles had an
anti-smoking theme. Moreover, there was no shortage of cigarette ads.
These findings show the hypocrisy of women's magazines that advocate for
healthy lifestyles yet continue to publish cigarette advertisements and
fail to provide adequate coverage on the health-related consequences of
smoking.
